Whilst in Dublin on 26th February 2009, I decided to enter Hodges and Figgis Book Shop on Dawson Street…
I was suffering from a constant bombardment of bad news brought to me via the Irish media and could do with a bit of cheering up, so I approached the Humour section.
What I saw depressed me even more, there were the books of high class humour from the likes of Alan Coren, P.G. Wodehouse, S.J. Perelman and Les Dawson, true humour that deserves to be given a place in the canon of literature, but next to these superior Tomes, were books like, ‘Potty, Fartwell and Knob’ and ‘Who Writes This Crap’ books that rely on cheap laughs and unfunny writing. The fact that these books were under the same section as the aforementioned really did depress me and whilst I have no problem with these books being available surely they cannot be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of ‘The Wit and Wisdom of P.G Wodehouse’ , ‘Les Dawson Secret Notebooks’ or ‘Chocolate and Cuckoo Clocks’
Books such as these are the reason that Humour gets sniffed at and dismissed and as someone who labels himself a humorist, I feel that this does me harm as I truly believe in what I do. I write Humour for Children and I feel this is an exceptionally important thing to do. I believe that Humour is a way of getting Children interested in reading and if that Humour is well written it should be held in some regard as an artistic endeavor. That is why I feel the introduction of the, ‘Roald Dahl Funny Prize’ is a wonderfully interesting development.
So as I mentioned on an entry on my other blog here. I plan to do something about feeling depressed because of this and here I am doing something about it… Later then I intended to but here is my new blog.
I intend to use this Blog to promote Sophisticated Humour written for Children…
Using Humour to help Children Learn is the geniuslly simple Idea that Sesame Street is based on and I’m sure the fact that Sesame Street is important is not disputed by any right-thinking adult.
I do hope you will enjoy this blog as I hope to enjoy putting it together.
